The Cyprus Police has joined the pan-European week of awareness and road control organized by the European Road Police Network Roadpol. The campaign runs until Sunday, February 15, and aims to improve road safety through intensified checks of trucks and buses. The main focus is not only on enforcement but also on explaining current legislation and informing about the risks that arise when it is not followed.

Such campaigns are regularly conducted in European Union countries and are part of the EU’s overall strategy to reduce the number of serious and fatal road accidents, especially those involving large vehicles.

What is monitored during inspections

During the operations, police officers pay special attention to the presence and validity of driver and vehicle documents, as well as the functioning of speed-limiting devices and tachographs. Monitoring includes compliance by professional drivers with established driving hours and working time regulations, which is directly related to fatigue levels behind the wheel. The technical and mechanical condition of buses and trucks is also checked, since malfunctions remain one of the key factors in accidents with severe consequences.

Combating the causes of serious accidents

A separate focus is placed on violations that most often lead to serious and fatal road collisions. First and foremost, this concerns speeding, which poses particular danger for freight and passenger transport due to vehicle mass and longer braking distances. The police emphasize that even minor violations of speed limits can have fatal consequences.

Context and current road situation

According to the latest pan-European data, trucks and buses are involved in fewer accidents compared to passenger cars; however, the consequences of such accidents are significantly more severe. For this reason, Roadpol regularly coordinates synchronized checks across all participating countries. In Cyprus, this initiative fits into a broader national policy aimed at improving road safety and reducing accident rates on intercity highways and near major transport hubs.

The Cyprus Police once again calls on professional drivers to strictly follow traffic rules and legislative requirements. Responsible behavior behind the wheel, technically sound vehicles, and compliance with work and rest regimes are considered key conditions for protecting the lives of drivers themselves, passengers, and all road users.
