A new large-format electric crossover with an extended driving range is preparing to debut on the Chinese market. The model has been named Volkswagen ID. Era 9X EREV and has already attracted expert attention after technical data were published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It is a full-size six-seat SUV measuring 5.2 meters in length, developed as part of a joint project between Volkswagen and SAIC. The vehicle was first shown as a concept in spring 2025 at the Shanghai Auto Show, where it was already presented as one of the most technologically advanced members of the ID family.

The EREV format means that in all versions the wheels are driven exclusively by electric motors, while a gasoline engine is used solely as a generator to recharge the battery. This role is performed by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that is not mechanically connected to the transmission and operates only to maintain the battery’s energy level.

Electric capabilities and driving range

In its standard configuration, the Volkswagen ID. Era 9X EREV is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 295 hp and a lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 51.1 kWh. This setup allows the vehicle to travel up to 267 km purely on electric power. For those seeking more, a second version is offered with the same power unit but a larger 65.2 kWh battery. In this case, the all-electric driving range increases to 340 km, making the vehicle one of the longest-range representatives in the EREV segment.

In the top configuration, the crossover gains an additional electric motor rated at 215 hp, bringing the total system output to 510 hp. Despite the increased power, this version also retains an impressive electric-only range of 321 km, emphasizing the model’s focus on everyday use without the constant need to engage the gasoline generator.

Large format with a focus on family buyers

A body length of 5.2 meters and a six-seat layout make the Volkswagen ID. Era 9X EREV a direct competitor to the largest electric SUVs on the Chinese market. The vehicle is aimed at families and corporate clients who value a spacious interior, a high level of comfort, and low operating costs. The EREV format reduces dependence on charging infrastructure density and makes the model more versatile for long-distance travel in regions where fast-charging stations are still limited.

When to expect it on sale

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X EREV is expected to go on sale in China during 2026. According to preliminary data, the production version may be unveiled at one of the upcoming auto shows in Beijing. Pricing information has not yet been disclosed, but experts suggest that the new model will be positioned at the upper end of the ID lineup, targeting buyers who want a large, powerful, and technologically advanced electric crossover without having to worry about driving range.

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X EREV is already being called one of the most anticipated electric new arrivals of 2026 in China, and this market will serve as the platform for its first commercial success.
