Cyprus’s car market continues to grow. According to data from the Statistical Service, 29,902 passenger cars were registered between January and August, compared with 26,961 during the same period in 2025. This represents market growth of 10.9%. Official statistics include vehicle registration data by type, brand and origin.
In August 2026 alone, 3,061 passenger cars were registered in Cyprus, up 9.2% from a year earlier, when the figure stood at 2,803 vehicles. Of the total number of cars registered during the first eight months of the year, 9,326, or 31.2%, were new. Another 20,576 vehicles, or 68.8%, were used cars. This category includes vehicles registered through both official dealerships and used-car sellers and platforms. As a result, the used-car market continues to account for the majority of total registrations in Cyprus.
Hybrids already account for more than half of the market
One of the main changes in Cyprus’s car market is the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles. Between January and August 2026, their share reached 52.4%, compared with 43.6% during the same period in 2025. By contrast, the share of fully electric vehicles fell from 4.8% to 4.3%. At the same time, the share of petrol-powered cars continued to decline. During the first eight months of 2026, it stood at 35.3%, compared with 43.2% a year earlier. The share of diesel cars also decreased, from 8.5% to 8%.
This means that the structure of Cyprus’s car market is gradually changing, with hybrid models becoming an increasingly prominent alternative to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. At the same time, official statistics from the Statistical Service of Cyprus show an overall increase of 11.2% in registrations of all types of vehicles between January and August 2026.
