The new electronic information sign system on Cyprus motorways, designed to promptly warn drivers about accidents, traffic jams, roadworks and other hazards, has proved less effective than expected. Currently, the signs are switched off at around 15:00, leaving drivers without important information in the afternoon and evening.
The Department of Public Works began installing the electronic signs in autumn 2025 as part of a road infrastructure modernisation programme. The project was intended to improve road safety and provide motorists with real-time information. However, in practice, the system is only partially used, which has already drawn criticism from the media and experts.
Why has the system been criticised?
The government has invested significant funds in a modern traffic management system, yet the equipment is far from being used to its full potential. Once the operators' working day ends, the messages displayed on the signs are no longer updated. Such an approach is unacceptable, as the system was created primarily to improve road safety. In emergencies, information displayed on the signs can help prevent serious accidents and even save lives.
In many European countries, similar systems operate around the clock and form an important part of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Electronic signs allow drivers to be promptly informed about:
- serious road accidents;
- motorway closures;
- roadworks;
- traffic congestion and emergency situations;
- adverse weather conditions;
- the need to take a detour around a dangerous section of road.
For example, if a motorway is closed for several hours due to an accident, motorists can choose an alternative route in advance, significantly reducing congestion and avoiding lengthy delays.
Authorities continue to modernise road infrastructure
In recent years, Cyprus has been actively introducing digital technologies to improve road safety. Automated traffic enforcement cameras are already in operation across the island, intelligent traffic management systems are being developed, and the use of dashcams in vehicles has been officially permitted since 23 July 2026.
Experts note that, to achieve maximum effectiveness, electronic information signs should operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, particularly during the summer months, when traffic volumes increase significantly due to the tourist season.
Experts are calling on the relevant authorities to review the system's current operating hours and ensure that the electronic signs are managed around the clock. In their view, modern infrastructure should be used to its full potential rather than only during government office hours, as timely warnings to drivers can prevent accidents and save lives.
