A new road connecting Deryneia and Sotira has officially opened in the free part of the Famagusta region. This infrastructure project is being described as one of the most significant developments in the area in recent years. With the opening of the new route, drivers no longer need to rely on outdated and congested roads, which is especially important for the growing tourism and agricultural sectors of Cyprus’s eastern coast.
Social Connectivity and Economic Growth in the Region
The new road represents far more than an improvement to the transport network. It plays a key role in strengthening the social and economic cohesion of the free Famagusta district. Historically, Deryneia and Sotira have always been closely linked through shared economic, cultural, and everyday activities. The upgraded highway now reinforces this connection, making daily travel easier for thousands of workers, students, and tourists. Local businesses are already reporting an increase in visitors, while residents benefit from reduced travel times to urban and tourist centers across the district.
What Lies Behind the €13.3 Million Price Tag?
The total cost of the project, excluding VAT, amounted to €13.3 million, but this investment goes far beyond simply laying asphalt. The defining feature of the project is its comprehensive approach. In addition to the main 3.6-kilometer route, builders completely upgraded approximately 2 kilometers of secondary roads. Drivers now benefit from modern roundabouts and underground utility networks. The project’s greatest achievement, however, is its focus on environmental sustainability and safety. Separate cycling lanes and wide paved sidewalks run along the road, while safe and convenient bus stops have been installed for public transport passengers.
Overcoming Geological and Utility Challenges
Behind the apparent simplicity of the road lies highly technical engineering work. According to Cyprus’s Public Works Department, the contractors faced serious challenges. The local soil was unsuitable for constructing a durable road base, requiring extensive excavation and soil replacement. In addition, the stormwater drainage system had to be expanded, and existing sewer networks were relocated and rebuilt. These unseen measures ensure that the new road will withstand heavy rainfall and serve the region reliably for decades.

Environmental Protection: Safeguarding Paralimni Lake
Particular attention was given to stormwater management. As part of the project, three artificial retention ponds were created with a combined capacity of approximately 40,000 cubic meters. Water from the roadway is not discharged directly into the ground but passes through specialized oil separators and overflow systems. This was designed to protect the hydrological basin of Paralimni Lake, an important natural habitat in the region. These measures help prevent pollution from oil residues and debris, preserving the lake’s unique ecosystem.
The new road brings practical benefits not only to tourists but also to farmers. The Kokkinochoria area is well known for its intensive agricultural activity and high-quality produce. Improved transport links have accelerated the delivery of fresh vegetables, fruits, and other goods from farms to processing facilities and urban markets. This has made logistics more efficient and reliable, directly affecting both retail prices and the incomes of local producers in 2026.
A Symbol of Development in Free Famagusta
In a district that was deeply affected by the Turkish invasion and continues to exist under the conditions of Cyprus’s division, projects like this carry strong symbolic importance. Every new kilometer of modern infrastructure strengthens residents’ confidence in the future and enhances the region’s attractiveness for investment. According to local authorities, the Deryneia–Sotira road is more than just asphalt — it is a concrete step toward improving quality of life and a strategic investment in the future of the entire free Famagusta area.
Construction began in August 2022 and was completed in the spring of 2026. The project was carried out by Lois Builders Ltd and Wade Adams Contracting Cyprus following an open tender process. The new Deryneia–Sotira road is expected to become a key element of the regional transport network, improving connections between communities, tourist zones, and agricultural areas across eastern Cyprus.
