Until June 18, drones will be operating over several sections of Cyprus motorways. According to the Department of Public Works, the flights are part of a large-scale traffic data collection project commissioned by the Ministry of Transport. The drones will patrol the skies daily from 09:30 to 17:00, covering three of the island’s key highways. The monitored sections are located across the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca, and the free Famagusta area.

Which Motorways Will Be Monitored

The drone routes have been selected to cover sections that traditionally experience the heaviest congestion. On the A1 motorway, drones will operate from the Ayia Varvara–Nisou interchange to the Sia interchange. On the A2 motorway, aerial monitoring will take place from the same Ayia Varvara–Nisou interchange to the Rizoelia interchange. The route will also include the A3 motorway, where drones will fly from the Rizoelia interchange to the Livadia exit. These locations were chosen deliberately, as they are major traffic corridors connecting the island’s largest cities and tourist destinations.

Why Drones Are Monitoring the Roads

Drone-based aerial surveys have long moved beyond being a novelty and have become an increasingly important tool for traffic planning worldwide, including in Cyprus. Unlike fixed cameras and sensors embedded in road surfaces, drones can capture an entire stretch of roadway from above, recording vehicle behaviour at entrances, exits, and merging points—areas where congestion and accidents are most likely to occur.

The collected information enables specialists to measure traffic volumes, calculate average travel speeds, and identify bottlenecks. The data can then be used to improve junction layouts, adjust road markings, and optimise traffic management schemes. The main advantage of drone monitoring is that it provides a complete overview of the entire section without requiring any intervention on the roadway itself, meaning no additional disruption for drivers.

Privacy and Safety: How Drivers’ Data Is Protected

According to the Department of Public Works, the drones will fly parallel to the motorway, above roadside embankments and away from the main traffic lanes, ensuring they do not distract motorists or interfere with traffic. All collected material will be processed in full compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), formally known as Regulation (EU) 2016/679. This means that personal information relating to vehicle owners will not be made publicly available and will only be used in anonymised and aggregated form for transport planning purposes.

The current monitoring programme is not a one-off initiative but part of Cyprus’s long-term strategy to integrate modern technologies into transport infrastructure management. Authorities have previously reported that the Cyprus Police are also exploring the use of professional drones for motorway patrols and traffic enforcement. In the future, unmanned aerial systems could become a valuable tool not only for collecting traffic statistics but also for responding to accidents and congestion in real time.
