According to the latest data from the statistical office Eurostat, in 2024 Cyprus recorded 42 road fatalities per 1 million inhabitants. This figure is below the European Union average of 44 deaths, indicating a gradual improvement in road safety on the island.

Despite ongoing risks, Cyprus now ranks in the middle of the European standings, showing more stable progress compared to several countries in Southern and Eastern Europe.

Overall Situation in the European Union

In 2024, 19,934 people died on EU roads, compared to 20,384 in 2023. This represents a decrease of 2.2% and marks the second consecutive year of positive progress.

Looking at the long-term trend, road fatalities in the EU have decreased by 17.4% over the past decade. However, temporary increases were observed in 2021 and 2022, linked to the recovery of transport activity after the pandemic.

Leaders and Laggards in Road Safety

The safest roads in Europe are found in northern countries. Sweden recorded just 20 deaths per 1 million inhabitants, Malta 21, and Denmark 24. These figures serve as a benchmark for the rest of Europe.

At the other end of the ranking are Romania with 78 deaths per 1 million inhabitants, Bulgaria with 74, and Greece with 64. These countries continue to face serious challenges in road safety.

Why the Situation in Cyprus Is Gradually Improving

Experts attribute the improvement in Cyprus to stricter traffic control, infrastructure upgrades, and the introduction of surveillance systems. In recent years, the island has actively installed traffic cameras, helping to reduce speeding and dangerous driving behavior.

Authorities are also strengthening public awareness campaigns aimed at improving driving culture. Particular focus is placed on combating drunk driving and the use of mobile phones while driving.

Economic Factors and Investment in Safety

The development of road infrastructure in Cyprus is directly linked to investments worth millions of euros. These funds are used to improve road surfaces, lighting, and to create safer interchanges, especially in high-traffic tourist areas. In 2026, the Cypriot government continues to implement road safety programs, including the modernization of key highways and the introduction of smart transport systems.

Despite positive progress, road fatalities remain a serious issue. With the growing number of vehicles and increasing tourist flows, pressure on Cyprus’s road network continues to rise. Nevertheless, current indicators show that the country is moving in the right direction. Even a slight reduction in fatalities is an important sign that the measures being taken are effective, and further investment in safety could lead to even greater improvements.
