The Cyprus traffic police have officially begun applying increased fines for improper parking in spaces designated for electric vehicle charging. Now any driver who leaves a vehicle at a public charging station receives an out-of-court fine of 85 euros. The violation is recorded regardless of whether the vehicle is an electric car or runs on traditional fuel if at the time of inspection it is not connected to the charger.

What has changed compared to previous regulations

Information about the new sanctions was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus on December 9, 2025 and confirmed by a police statement. Previously, the fine for parking at charging stations was only 25 euros, which, according to authorities, did not deter violators and hindered the development of electric vehicle infrastructure. Initially, a differentiated sanctions option was discussed, under which owners of internal combustion engine vehicles would have paid 100 euros, while electric vehicle drivers would have paid 50 euros. However, in the end, it was decided to introduce a single fine without differentiation by engine type.

Why authorities tightened control

The increase in fines is linked to the active growth in the number of electric vehicles in Cyprus and the rising load on charging infrastructure, especially in cities and tourist areas. Spaces at charging stations were increasingly occupied by vehicles that did not need charging, preventing electric vehicle owners from charging their transport on time. Authorities expect that the 85-euro fine will discipline drivers and ensure real availability of charging points.

What drivers need to know

The new rule also applies to electric vehicle owners if their car is parked at a station without actual charging. Compliance monitoring will be carried out on a continuous basis, and fines will be issued within an out-of-court procedure. It is expected that in 2026, against the backdrop of expanding charging station networks and environmental programs, such measures will become an important part of policy supporting sustainable transport in Cyprus.
