New Fines for Traffic Violations at Camera-Controlled Intersections to Take Effect in Cyprus on March 1

From March 1 in Cyprus, changes to the legislation come into force concerning fines for traffic violations at signal-controlled intersections and pedestrian crossings. The adjustments were officially announced by the relevant authorities, and Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis confirmed this information at a meeting of the Parliamentary Transport Committee.

An 85-euro fine instead of 300: what will change for drivers

The main change concerns stopping a vehicle directly on a pedestrian crossing at a traffic light. Now, for such a violation, the driver faces a fine of 85 euros instead of the previous 300 euros. The decision to reduce the amount was made after discussions, taking into account the principle of proportionality of punishment.

According to representatives of the transport authority, such cases often occur in dense urban traffic when a driver does not manage to correctly calculate the distance to the stop line. Despite the reduction in the amount, the violation is still considered administrative and is recorded by road-control cameras.

In which cases the 300-euro fine remains

It is important to note that the 300-euro fine is fully retained in more serious situations. This amount will apply if a vehicle stopped beyond the pedestrian crossing or entered the intersection and continued moving within the road-crossing zone while the traffic light was showing a red signal.

Such actions are considered potentially dangerous because they create a risk for pedestrians and other road users. That is why lawmakers decided to keep the higher fine in euros unchanged.

25 euros for crossing the stop line

The existing rule of a 25-euro fine for failing to comply with the requirement to stop before the waiting line at a traffic light also remains unchanged. This violation is classified as ignoring a road sign and is still subject to an administrative penalty. Road safety specialists remind that even partially crossing the stop line can obstruct pedestrians’ view and affect intersection safety.

Why the changes matter for motorists

The update of fines in euros is aimed at a fairer distribution of responsibility depending on the degree of danger of the violation. In recent years, enforcement of the rules has been strengthened thanks to the introduction of automatic recording cameras and digital processing of fines, which has significantly increased the detection of violations.

From March 1, drivers should pay especially close attention to traffic light signals and keep proper distance when approaching intersections. Despite the reduction of the fine to 85 euros in certain cases, responsibility for road safety remains a priority for the authorities and all road users.
