Hybrids Are Rapidly Replacing Petrol Cars in Cyprus
In April 2026, the car market in Cyprus showed noticeable growth. According to the Statistical Service, the total number of vehicle registrations reached 4,733, which is 22.1% more compared to April 2025, when 3,877 vehicles were registered.
The passenger car segment grew particularly actively. In April, the number of new registrations of saloon cars increased by 24.2% — from 2,924 to 3,632 vehicles. Experts attribute this trend to the continued recovery of consumer demand, the expansion of offers from car dealers, and the growing interest of Cyprus residents in more economical models.
In four months, the market grew by more than 15%
From January to April 2026, 18,570 vehicles were registered in Cyprus. This is 15.1% more compared to the same period last year, when the figure stood at 16,133.
The number of registered passenger cars in the first four months of the year increased by 14% and reached 14,259, compared to 12,509 a year earlier. At the same time, the used car market continues to dominate. Of the total number of passenger cars, 9,459 vehicles, or 66.3%, were used cars. A total of 4,800 new cars were registered, corresponding to 33.7% of the market.
Against the backdrop of overall growth, interest in rental cars declined. Registrations of rental vehicles fell by 14.8% — from 1,551 to 1,321. Analysts link this to changes in the tourism market and caution among car rental companies following the sharp renewal of fleets in previous years.
Hybrids are becoming market leaders
One of the main trends of 2026 has been the rapid increase in the popularity of hybrid cars. Their market share grew from 43.3% to 50.8%. In fact, every second registered passenger car in Cyprus is now a hybrid.
At the same time, interest in petrol cars continues to decline. Their share decreased from 42.9% to 35.6%. Diesel cars are also gradually losing ground — their share fell from 9% to 8.5%.
The electric vehicle market is still growing at a more moderate pace, but interest in EVs continues to increase. The share of electric cars rose from 4.8% to 5.2%. The situation is influenced by the development of charging infrastructure in Cyprus and government support programmes for eco-friendly transport.
Experts note that island residents are increasingly choosing hybrids due to high fuel prices and the desire to reduce vehicle operating costs. The European Union’s environmental policy also plays an additional role, as it is gradually tightening requirements for traditional internal combustion engines.
Demand for trucks and motorcycles is growing
Noticeable growth was also recorded in the commercial vehicle segment. In the first four months of 2026, the number of truck registrations increased by 17.8% — from 1,921 to 2,263 units.
The heavy truck market grew especially actively, with an increase of 34.7%. The number of registrations reached 287. Light trucks added 13.4%, while road tractors increased by 19.2%.
The rental commercial vehicle segment showed one of the highest growth rates — as much as 66.2%. This may be linked to increased activity in the construction sector, logistics, and small business in Cyprus.
In addition, demand for motorcycles rose significantly. The number of registrations of motorcycles with an engine capacity of over 50 cm3 increased by 21.5% — from 1,371 to 1,666. Against the backdrop of road congestion and rising fuel prices, many Cyprus residents are increasingly considering two-wheeled transport as a more convenient and economical alternative to cars.
At the same time, the small-capacity moped segment continues to decline. In the first months of 2026, only 43 such vehicles were registered, compared to 80 a year earlier.
What is happening in the Cyprus car market
Automotive market specialists believe that in 2026 Cyprus continues to move confidently towards more environmentally friendly transport. The main driver remains hybrid cars, which currently appear to be the most convenient compromise between cost, fuel efficiency, and the availability of charging infrastructure.
An additional factor supporting sales growth is strong demand for personal transport after several years of instability in the global economy and problems with vehicle supply. Despite persistently high prices, the Cyprus market is demonstrating steady activity across almost all transport segments.
