In 2025, Cyprus maintained a steady trend of growth in the number of electric vehicles and hybrid cars. According to official data, the share of electric vehicles among all sedan-type passenger cars increased from 4% in 2024 to 4.7% in 2025. Hybrid models showed an even more noticeable rise, with their share growing from 37.1% to 44.3% over the year. These indicators confirm a gradual but steady shift of the market toward more environmentally friendly types of transport.

Against this backdrop, interest in traditional internal combustion engines is declining. The share of gasoline cars fell to 42% compared to 48.6% a year earlier, while diesel vehicles dropped to 8.9%, whereas in 2024 their share exceeded 10%. This dynamic reflects not only changes in consumer preferences, but also the impact of European environmental policy and rising fuel prices.

Overall dynamics of vehicle registrations

As follows from the report “Registration of Motor Vehicles” published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, from January to December 2025 the total number of registered vehicles increased by 5.8% and reached 52,508 units. For comparison, in 2024 this figure stood at 49,616 vehicles.

Passenger car registrations rose even more noticeably. Over the year, their number increased by 6.2% to 40,778 cars versus 38,410 a year earlier. At the same time, the market still relies mainly on used cars, which accounted for more than 60% of all registrations, although the share of new vehicles remains significant and continues to support the renewal of the country’s fleet.

Rental cars and commercial transport

Particular attention should be paid to the rental-car segment, which showed sharp growth in 2025. The number of registered rental vehicles increased by more than 30%, which is directly linked to the recovery of tourist flows and the active development of Cyprus’s tourism infrastructure.

Positive dynamics were also observed in the commercial transport segment. Registrations of trucks rose by nearly 7%, including light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and tractors. The number of registered buses also increased, indicating an обновление of public transport and corporate fleets.

Two-wheeled transport: divergent trends

The two-wheeled transport market in 2025 showed a mixed picture. The number of registered mopeds with engine capacity up to 50 cm3 dropped sharply compared to the previous year. At the same time, the segment of motorcycles with engine capacity above 50 cm3, on the contrary, demonstrated solid growth of more than 14%. This may indicate a shift in preferences toward more powerful and versatile vehicles.

Countries of manufacture and color preferences

According to the statistics, Japan remained the leading country of manufacture among vehicles registered in Cyprus in 2025, accounting for more than 44% of the market. It is followed by Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. This distribution highlights the trust of Cypriot drivers in Japanese and European brands, known for their reliability and technology.

As for color preferences, the most popular car color in 2025 was white. It clearly outpaced gray, black, blue, and silver, which aligns with global trends and the island’s climate conditions.

Record-breaking December and outlook

Especially strong growth was recorded in December 2025. In that month, the number of vehicle registrations increased by more than 27% compared to December 2024. Passenger car registrations grew even faster, showing an increase of more than 36%. Experts attribute this surge to active end-of-year sales, fleet renewals by companies, and expectations of further changes in tax and environmental policy.

Overall, the 2025 data confirm that Cyprus’s automotive market is confidently moving toward hybrid and electric technologies. If current trends persist, their share will continue to grow, gradually displacing gasoline and diesel models and shaping a greener transport future on the island.
