Road Section Astrοmeritis–Evrychou Opens to Traffic in Cyprus
In Cyprus, a new section of the Astromeritis–Evrychou highway has been officially put into operation. It is part of a large-scale infrastructure project aimed at significantly improving transport links between Nicosia and the Troodos Mountains. The road was opened on Saturday, May 2, following the completion of technical inspections.
Why this road is important for Cyprus
The new 11.3 km route connects the Astromeritis and Evrychou areas, providing faster and safer access to mountain communities. For residents of the Solea and Marathasa regions, this is a particularly significant development, as the need to modernize the road had been raised for many years.
The old route had long been criticized due to difficult terrain, numerous sharp bends, and limited capacity. The problem was especially acute during winter and peak tourist seasons, when the road became potentially dangerous. The launch of the new route is expected to significantly reduce travel time for motorists heading to popular mountain villages, including areas known for agritourism, wine routes, and natural attractions.
How construction was carried out
Construction began in 2022 under the supervision of the Public Works Department of Cyprus. The project required extensive engineering preparation due to the complex mountainous landscape. Builders had to comply with strict environmental regulations, as part of the route passes near protected natural areas.
Additional challenges arose from disruptions in international supply chains for construction materials, which temporarily affected the pace of work. Despite this, the project was completed on schedule, and the road infrastructure meets modern safety standards.
The new section replaces an outdated road that could no longer handle increasing traffic volumes. Traffic is now organized along a wider roadway with high-quality surfacing, modern drainage systems, and improved road markings. Special attention has been given to safety. Wider lanes, reinforced shoulders, and improved visibility on difficult sections make travel significantly more comfortable.
According to preliminary estimates, the road will reduce travel time from Nicosia to the western part of the mountainous region, which is particularly important for the tourism sector and local businesses.
The next phase is already in development
It is worth noting that the modernization of the Nicosia–Troodos route does not end here. The next phase will involve the construction of the Denia–Astromeritis section, approximately 17 km long.
This stage is considered strategically important, as it will complete the formation of an upgraded transport corridor between the capital and the island’s mountainous regions. Cypriot authorities expect that once the entire project is completed, the road will become one of the main routes for domestic tourism, improve logistics, and provide an additional boost to the development of remote areas.
