An important milestone for outdoor enthusiasts and active lifestyle advocates has taken place in the heart of the Cypriot capital. The first section of the upgraded Pedieos River zone has officially opened. Along the former riverbed, a modern pedestrian and cycling corridor has now been created. The route begins at the pedestrian crossing near the historic Ledra Palace and gradually leads visitors towards the green river corridor. The newly completed section stretches for 1.2 kilometres.

How the New Route Is Designed

Throughout the entire section, contractors have constructed a convenient two-way cycling lane, a safe pedestrian pathway, and extensive green landscaping that helps improve local air quality. The opening itself turned into a vibrant celebration of sustainable mobility. Organisers marked the occasion with a symbolic group cycling event attended by representatives of the European Union, officials from the UNDP programme, local residents, and, notably, both mayors of Nicosia — from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

What You Can Do Along the Route

The new pathway is ideally suited for both leisurely walks and energetic bike rides. It runs directly alongside the river through the central area of the divided capital. It is important to note that the new section seamlessly connects to the larger Pedieos Linear Park network. This is the oldest and longest green corridor in Cyprus, originally established in 2002.

As for the Pedieos River itself, it holds the distinction of being the longest river on the island. Its source lies high in the Troodos Mountains, and in ancient times the waterway was navigable.

The Main Goal of the Project

The concept behind the project is simple yet highly significant for urban sustainability. The initiative aims to revitalise a long-neglected river and provide residents with a green space that can be easily reached on foot or by bicycle, encouraging people to leave their cars behind. Another important objective is to help strengthen connections between communities living on both sides of the division line.

According to preliminary estimates, the pathway is expected to attract up to 250,000 visitors annually. And this is only the beginning. City authorities and project developers plan to extend the entire green corridor along the Pedieos River to a total length of 3.7 kilometres. It has already been confirmed that the second phase of construction will begin in September 2026.
