Cyprus’s car market showed strong growth last year and, for the first time, surpassed the 40,000-registration mark. According to data from the Statistical Service, in 2025 a total of 40 778 passenger cars (sedan body type) were registered, which is 6.2% more compared to 38 410 cars in 2024. The positive trend confirms a recovery in consumer demand amid economic stabilization and the gradual renewal of the country’s vehicle fleet.

New and used cars: the balance remains

Used cars still make up the main share of the market. In 2025, they accounted for 64.1% of all registrations, which corresponds to 26 145 cars. New cars made up 35.9% of the market with 14 633 registrations. This structure remains typical for Cyprus, where buyers traditionally prefer more affordable options, especially amid rising living costs and borrowing.

Fuel preferences: hybrids strengthen their position

The most notable trend of 2025 was the further strengthening of hybrid vehicles. Their share increased to 44.3% compared to 37.1% in 2024, reflecting drivers’ desire to reduce fuel costs and adapt to EU environmental requirements. At the same time, the share of petrol cars fell to 42% from 48.6% a year earlier, and diesel — to 8.9% versus 10.3% in 2024. Electric vehicles still occupy a modest niche, but their share rose to 4.7% from 4% a year earlier, supported by government incentives and the development of charging infrastructure on the island.

Market leaders: brands and Cypriots’ preferences

Overall, the absolute leader in 2025 in the sedan segment remained Toyota with 8 020 registrations. It is followed by Mazda (4 898) and Nissan (3 716). In the premium segment, BMW held strong positions with 2 369 registrations and Mercedes with 2 076. Next in the ranking were Kia (1 817), Volkswagen (1 443), Honda (1 308), Hyundai (1 307) and Audi (897).

Market outlook

Experts note that in 2026 the car market in Cyprus may maintain moderate growth, driven by the renewal of corporate fleets, the tourism sector, and a further shift in demand toward more economical and environmentally friendly models. At the same time, the key factor will remain the population’s purchasing power and the level of prices for cars and fuel.
