The car market in Cyprus continues to show strong activity. According to the latest statistics, from January to February 2026, 6,917 passenger cars in sedan body style were registered. Of this number, 6,381 registrations are private vehicles used by owners for personal purposes.

The leading position in the market is confidently held by the Japanese automaker Toyota. In the first two months of the new year, it accounted for 1,490 registrations, allowing the company to significantly outpace its competitors.

Second place went to Mazda with 879 registrations. It is followed by Nissan with 590 vehicles, BMW with 473 registrations, and Mercedes, closing the top five with 429 cars.

The list of popular brands also includes Honda with 286 registrations, Kia with 269, Volkswagen with 239, Audi with 162, and the Chinese manufacturer BYD, whose cars were registered 150 times.

The situation in the new car market

New passenger cars account for about one-third of the country’s total car market. In the first two months of 2026, the share of new cars was 34.7%. During this period, 2,401 new cars were registered, of which 2,216 were purchased by private owners.

The most popular brand among new cars was Kia, whose models were registered 253 times. Slightly behind are Toyota with 189 registrations and Nissan with 187 vehicles. Among the most in-demand new cars are also Volkswagen with 181 registrations and BMW, which were registered 175 times.

Other well-known brands are also present in the ranking of new cars. Mercedes registered 153 vehicles, the Chinese company BYD reached 150 registrations, Hyundai — 128 cars, Renault — 106, and Audi — 79.

Experts note that the growing interest in new cars in Cyprus is associated with improved lending conditions, the development of electric and hybrid models, as well as government programs promoting environmentally friendly transport.

Used cars remain the backbone of the market

Despite the interest in new models, used cars still make up the main share of the Cyprus car market. At the beginning of 2026, their share reached 63.3%. In the first two months, 4,516 such cars were registered, of which 4,165 were purchased by private individuals.

Registration of used cars takes place both through official dealership centers and through specialized platforms and car dealerships dealing in used vehicles.

Toyota also confidently leads the used car market. In January and February 2026, vehicles of this brand were registered 1,301 times. Mazda ranks second with 867 registrations, and third place goes to Nissan, whose vehicles were registered 403 times.

They are followed by BMW with 298 registrations and Mercedes with 276 vehicles. Among popular brands in the secondary market, Honda can also be highlighted, with its cars registered 260 times. Audi reached 83 registrations, Suzuki — 81, Land Rover — 63, and Volkswagen — 58.

Why used cars are popular in Cyprus

Automotive market experts explain the high demand for used cars by several factors. First, the cost of such vehicles is significantly lower compared to new models, making them more affordable for a wide range of buyers. Second, cars are actively imported to the island from the United Kingdom and Japan, which expands the selection of models on the secondary market.

In addition, for many residents of Cyprus, an important factor is operating cost efficiency and the opportunity to purchase a higher-class car at an affordable price. That is why used cars continue to occupy a significant share of the country’s automotive market.

Trends in the Cyprus car market

In recent years, the Cyprus car market has been gradually changing. Along with traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles, interest in hybrid and fully electric models is growing. Chinese brands such as BYD are beginning to strengthen their position in the market due to more affordable pricing and advancements in electric vehicle technology.

Analysts believe that in the coming years the market structure may gradually change. The share of new cars will grow thanks to European Union environmental initiatives and support programs for eco-friendly transport; however, used cars will remain an important part of the Cyprus automotive sector for a long time.
