Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki is bringing the KLR650 back to its global lineup. The model is known for its simple design, durability, and ability to cover long distances without frequent fuel stops. The company has prepared three versions of the motorcycle for the 2027 model year. The updated KLR650 is designed for both everyday riding and long-distance travel on a variety of road surfaces.

Kawasaki KLR650: history and key features

The history of the Kawasaki KLR family began in 1984. The original version was equipped with a 564 cc engine producing 42 hp and used a kick starter. An electric starter was introduced two years after the model’s debut. The familiar KLR650 design took shape in the mid-2000s. The motorcycle received fairings for improved wind protection and a 22-liter fuel tank, increasing its riding range.

More than 100,000 KLR650 motorcycles were sold in Australia, South Africa, the United States, and Canada. Production resumed in 2022, although the model was previously offered mainly in selected markets. For 2027, Kawasaki is retaining the family’s key characteristics: relatively simple construction, a single-cylinder engine, and practicality. At the same time, the manufacturer is placing greater emphasis on long-distance comfort and protection for key components.

Three versions of the 2027 Kawasaki KLR650

For the 2027 model year, Kawasaki has prepared three versions designed for different riding conditions. The Kawasaki KLR650 DF (Durable Force) is a more rugged version intended for challenging routes. Its equipment includes engine protection, crash bars around the fairings, hand guards, and mounting points for hard luggage. It also comes with a wider and thicker handlebar and other features aimed at off-road use.

The Kawasaki KLR650 S is intended for riders who prefer a lower seat height. This setup makes mounting the motorcycle easier and helps riders place their feet more securely on the ground. The Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure is the touring-oriented version with additional equipment. It includes factory side cases, auxiliary fog lights, hand guards, and USB ports. This configuration is designed for longer trips with luggage.

European versions will come with ABS as standard equipment. Final specifications and equipment levels for the European market should be confirmed once regional details are officially published.

Engine, specifications, and riding range

The 2027 Kawasaki KLR650 is powered by a 652 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine. The engine uses fuel injection and is designed for long-term use in a variety of road conditions. Key specifications include:

  1. Engine displacement: 652 cc
  2. Power: about 40 hp
  3. Torque: about 53 Nm at 4,500 rpm
  4. Compression ratio: 9.8:1
  5. Transmission: 5-speed
  6. Front brake disc: 300 mm
  7. Rear brake disc: 240 mm
  8. Fuel tank capacity: 23 liters
  9. Claimed riding range: up to 450 km

The model uses a traditional suspension setup designed to be relatively easy to maintain and repair in the field. Instead of relying on extensive complex electronics, Kawasaki focuses on practicality and durability. At speeds of 90–110 km/h, fuel consumption under some conditions may be around 2 liters per 100 km. At speeds of up to 150 km/h, consumption may rise to around 6 liters per 100 km. Actual figures depend on speed, road conditions, load, and riding style.

When the 2027 Kawasaki KLR650 goes on sale and how much it costs

According to dealers in Australia, the new motorcycles are expected to arrive in showrooms in December 2026. Timing in other markets may vary. In the United States, Kawasaki has already announced starting prices for the main 2027 versions:

  1. KLR650: $6,999.
  2. KLR650 ABS: $7,299.
  3. KLR650 S: $6,999 without ABS and $7,299 with ABS.
  4. KLR650 DF ABS: $7,699.
  5. KLR650 Adventure ABS: $8,199.

These figures are base suggested retail prices for the U.S. market. They do not include destination charges, taxes, or additional dealer fees.

European pricing for the 2027 Kawasaki KLR650 had not been announced at the time of publication. As a result, the motorcycle’s price in euros and its expected arrival date at European dealerships are still unknown. The return of the KLR650 expands the range of dual-purpose motorcycles available to riders looking for a machine suitable for both daily transportation and long-distance travel. Kawasaki is keeping the model’s traditional concept while offering several equipment packages tailored to different types of riding.
