The municipality of Ayia Napa has begun implementing a modern parking management system that will allow real-time monitoring of available parking spaces. The project is being carried out as part of the national digital modernization program Smart Cyprus, aimed at developing “smart city” technologies on the island.

The first sensors have already been installed at the municipal parking lot Melissi. The pilot testing of the new system took place on March 9, 2026. Specialists from MK TTS installed sensor devices in the parking area that are capable of detecting the presence of a vehicle in a parking space and instantly transmitting the information to the digital management system.

The collected data will be available both to municipal services and to drivers, who will be able to find out in advance about available spaces and locate parking faster, especially during peak hours in the city.

How the digital parking system works

The new system is based on a network of sensors embedded in parking spaces. When a vehicle occupies or leaves a space, the sensor automatically records the change and sends the information to a central platform. These data are updated almost instantly and displayed in the Smart Parking mobile application.

Using the digital service, drivers will be able to see the nearest available parking spaces on the city map, build a route to them, and pay for parking directly through the application. In addition, the system will inform users about parking rules and possible fines, helping to avoid violations.

For the convenience of residents and tourists, access to the service is provided through the mobile application Larnaka App, which works on both iOS devices and smartphones with the Android operating system. In the future, such digital solutions may be integrated with other urban services.

Why the city needs “smart” parking

According to municipal authorities, the implementation of the digital system will significantly reduce the time needed to find a parking space. This is especially important for Ayia Napa, which receives hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. During the summer season, the flow of cars in the resort city increases sharply, leading to traffic congestion near popular beaches, restaurants, and hotels.

“Smart” parking technology is expected to reduce the transport load on central streets and make traffic more organized. When a driver knows in advance where a free space is available, they do not have to drive around the area searching for parking. This also helps reduce exhaust emissions and improve the environmental situation in the city. Similar systems are already widely used in major European cities, including Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen. Now cities in Cyprus are also gradually adopting digital solutions.

Plans to expand the system across the city

Mayor of Ayia Napa Christos Zannetou noted that the pilot project is only the first stage of a large-scale digital modernization program for the municipality. According to him, in the future, sensors are planned to be installed in all municipal parking areas of the city.

In addition to the Smart Parking system, authorities are also working on other technological initiatives. In the coming years, the introduction of intelligent street lighting is planned, which will automatically adjust lighting levels depending on the time of day and street activity. At the same time, the implementation of digital solutions for managing the waste collection system is being considered.

The digital future of cities in Cyprus

The project in Ayia Napa is part of the broader Smart Cyprus program, which aims to develop “smart” urban infrastructure across the country. The main goal of the program is to introduce modern technologies into municipal services, increase the efficiency of city management, and improve the quality of life for residents.

Experts note that the digitalization of the urban environment is becoming one of the key directions in the development of tourist regions. For resort cities such as Ayia Napa, this is especially important, as modern technologies help better manage traffic flows, increase comfort for tourists, and make the city more convenient for living and recreation.
