The long-awaited modernization of public transport infrastructure has begun in Paphos. The first works to replace old bus stops are already under way in the tourist area, one of the city’s busiest districts, where thousands of residents and visitors use public transport every day.
The announcement was made by Acting Mayor of Paphos Angelos Onisiforou. According to him, the new bus shelters will make waiting for public transport more comfortable and safer. The project is expected to be extended across the entire city, although the municipality has not yet announced a specific completion date.
Why the Project Has Only Started Now
The replacement of the bus stops forms part of a major public transport development program in Paphos and the neighboring Municipality of Geroskipou. The original contract with the contractor was signed on December 2, 2019, but the project encountered serious delays. On September 19, 2023, the municipality terminated the agreement because the contractor had completed only part of the planned works. By the time the contract was terminated, only three facilities had been completed:
- the Karavella bus terminal;
- the transport hub on Tombs of the Kings Avenue;
- the transport facility near Kato Paphos Harbour.
The remaining elements of the project, including the installation of 196 bus stops and the construction of public sanitation facilities, were transferred to the second phase of implementation.
What Will Change After the Work Is Completed
The new bus stops will meet modern urban infrastructure standards. They will provide more comfortable conditions for passengers, particularly during the hot summer months. The project involves the creation of a modern public transport network designed to make travel more convenient for both local residents and the many tourists who visit Paphos throughout the year.
In addition to the new bus stops, the second phase will also include the construction of public sanitation facilities and the completion of other transport infrastructure elements included in the original project.
Who Is Financing the Modernization
The second phase of the project is being implemented under the THALIA 2021–2027 Cohesion Policy Programme, with financial support from the European Union. The first phase of the project was also carried out with funding from the EU Cohesion Fund.
The modernization of public transport remains one of Paphos’s development priorities. In recent years, the city has been actively investing in upgrading its road network, improving tourist areas, and creating modern urban infrastructure. The replacement of bus stops is expected to make public transport more attractive, reduce the use of private cars, and make travel around the city more convenient and environmentally friendly for both residents and visitors to Cyprus.
