Cyprus’s car market continues to grow. From January to July 2026, passenger car registrations increased by 11.1% to 26,841, compared with 24,158 during the same period in 2025. In July alone, 4,244 passenger cars were registered — 2.2% more than in July last year, when the figure stood at 4,154.
The latest data were published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT). The next set of statistics, covering January–August, is expected to be released on September 8, 2026.
Hybrids account for more than half of the market for the first time
Of the 26,841 cars registered during the first 7 months of the year, 8,614, or 32.1%, were new vehicles. Another 18,227, or 67.9%, were used cars registered through official dealerships, traders and used-car sales platforms.
The main trend in Cyprus’s car market remains the rapid rise in the popularity of hybrids. Their share increased from 43.3% in January–July 2025 to 51.9% in 2026. The share of fully electric vehicles rose only slightly, from 4.65% to 4.8%.
At the same time, the share of petrol-powered cars continues to decline, falling from 43.3% to 35.5%. The share of diesel cars also decreased, from 8.5% to 8%. Of the total number of registered passenger cars, 23,558 were private vehicles.
Toyota leads overall, but Kia ranks first among new cars
Toyota confidently leads the overall passenger car ranking for January–July 2026 with 6,208 registrations. It is followed by:
- Mazda — 2,990;
- Nissan — 1,998;
- BMW — 1,689;
- Mercedes — 1,395.
The top ten also included Honda — 1,019, Kia — 990, Volkswagen — 706, BYD — 548, Audi — 542 and Hyundai — 509. However, among new passenger cars, there is a different leader. A total of 8,614 new cars were registered over the 7-month period, of which 7,542 were private vehicles. New cars maintained a 32.1% share of the passenger car market.
Kia ranked first in this category with 943 registrations. It was followed by Toyota — 652, Nissan — 616, while BYD, which is rapidly expanding in the Cyprus market, recorded 540 registrations. BMW completed the top five with 520. The list of the most popular new cars also included Volkswagen — 495, Hyundai — 450, Mercedes — 368, Renault — 327 and Jeep — 290.
Used cars retain two-thirds of the market
Despite the growth in new car sales, used vehicles still account for the largest share of Cyprus’s car market. In January–July, their share reached 67.9%, with 18,227 registrations. Of these, 16,016 were private vehicles.
These statistics include used cars registered through official dealerships, traders and used-car sales platforms. Toyota remains the leading brand among used passenger cars, with 5,556 registrations.
Mazda ranks second with 2,954 registrations, followed by Nissan — 1,382, BMW — 1,169 and Mercedes — 1,027. The ten most popular used-car brands also included Honda — 953, Lexus — 339, Audi — 331, Suzuki — 279 and Volvo — 276.
Overall, Cyprus’s car market in 2026 is showing two clear trends: the total number of registrations is increasing, while demand is rapidly shifting toward hybrid vehicles. Used cars still significantly outnumber new ones, accounting for 67.9% of all registrations.
