One of the largest road infrastructure improvement programmes in recent years has officially begun in Limassol. The municipality will invest more than €7.9 million, excluding VAT, in upgrading the city's roads, with all works scheduled for completion by November 2026. The project includes laying new asphalt, carrying out localized road surface repairs, and applying modern road markings.

City officials say the programme forms part of a broader effort to modernize Limassol's transport infrastructure as the city continues to grow in both population and the number of vehicles on its roads.

Which roads will be repaired

Contracts for the works have already been signed with Cyfield Asphalt Co Ltd and Araco Construction CY Ltd. Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis attended the signing ceremony.

The repairs will be carried out in phases across several districts of the city. New asphalt will be laid on major roads as well as in the neighbourhoods of Agios Nektarios, Agios Nikolaos, Kapsalos, Mesa Geitonia, Zakaki, Omonia, Agia Fyla, Agios Antonios, and several other areas. The programme also includes Limassol's industrial zone, where heavy goods traffic is particularly intense on a daily basis.

In addition to completely resurfacing selected roads, the project includes localized repairs to damaged pavement, the repair of cracks and potholes, and the renewal of road markings, all aimed at improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

Road investment has increased severalfold

Funding for road repairs in Limassol has risen significantly over the past two years. While €1.6 million was allocated in 2024, the budget increased to €4.3 million in 2025 and reached €8.2 million in 2026. Overall, investment has grown by approximately five times.

The municipality attributes the increase in spending to the need to modernize the city's infrastructure. In recent years, Limassol's population has continued to expand, new residential developments and commercial projects have been built, and traffic volumes have increased steadily each year.

Why road repairs are especially important for Limassol

Limassol remains the fastest-growing city in Cyprus. According to local authorities, thousands of new vehicles are registered in the city every year, placing increasing pressure on the existing road network. At the same time, major infrastructure projects continue, including the development of new residential areas, the reconstruction of city streets, and improvements to transport accessibility.

Upgrading the road surface is expected not only to make travel more comfortable but also to reduce vehicle maintenance costs, lower the number of road accidents, and improve overall road safety.

Drivers advised to expect temporary traffic restrictions

During the construction period, temporary traffic restrictions, changes to traffic arrangements, and partial lane closures may be introduced on certain streets. The municipality asks residents and visitors to be patient, follow temporary road signs, and plan their journeys in advance.

Once the programme is completed, the authorities expect a substantial improvement across much of Limassol's road network, making it one of the city's largest infrastructure upgrades in recent years.
