The Cyprus Road Transport Department issued an official warning about potentially dangerous Chinese-made airbags produced by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN). The warning follows urgent information received from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which recorded a series of serious incidents linked to the use of these spare parts.
According to US regulators, at least 10 road traffic accidents have already been recorded in the United States in which the use of DTN airbags resulted in fatalities or severe injuries. The cause was the rupture of the airbag housing during deployment and the ejection of metal fragments into the vehicle cabin.
Why these airbags are especially dangerous
This does not concern factory-installed airbags, but non-original products used as replacements after accidents. In the event of a collision, such airbags may deploy incorrectly, turning a safety system into a direct threat to drivers and passengers. Experts emphasize that such defects are often discovered only in real accidents, when the consequences become irreversible.
Although there are currently no confirmed cases of these airbags being present on the Cypriot market, the authorities consider it necessary to warn both businesses and consumers in advance.
Obligations of importers, sellers, and auto repair shops
The Road Transport Department called on all importers and sellers of auto parts who may have imported or sold such products within the Republic of Cyprus to immediately inform the state authorities. The law requires economic operators to take measures to recall dangerous goods from the market.
Special attention is being paid to auto mechanics and body repair shops. Under current legislation, they are required to keep detailed records of all replacements and repairs carried out on vehicles. This data can play a key role in identifying potentially dangerous components.
What consumers should do
Car owners are advised to contact their mechanic, body repair specialist, or parts seller if there is any suspicion that such an airbag may have been installed in their vehicle. In the event that a seller or importer refuses to cooperate and comply with consumer protection requirements, citizens are advised to submit a written complaint to the Consumer Protection Service via the official online portal.
The Road Transport Department also stated that it will inform the Electromechanical Service, professional associations, and relevant organizations in order to disseminate the information to industry specialists as quickly as possible.
Control and further steps
The Cypriot authorities continue to closely monitor developments at the European level. If relevant notifications are issued by EU institutions or through the Safety Gate rapid alert system, additional measures will be taken, including an expanded public information campaign.
Against the backdrop of growing imports of auto parts from third countries, experts remind that the use of certified and tested components is a key factor in road safety, especially given the increasing number of vehicles and traffic intensity.
