The Cyprus Department of Road Transport has announced the recall of 664 Saab vehicles. The reason for this decision is a potentially dangerous defect in Takata driver airbags, which may pose a serious risk to the driver's life and safety if deployed.
Why the Saab Recall in Cyprus Is Considered Critical
Investigations have revealed that some Saab vehicles are equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators. In the event of a traffic accident and airbag deployment, the inflator housing may rupture. As a result, metal fragments can be propelled into the passenger compartment at high speed, potentially causing severe injuries or even death.
The Takata airbag issue is considered one of the largest automotive safety scandals in history. Over recent years, millions of vehicles from various manufacturers have been recalled worldwide due to the same defect. International investigations have linked faulty Takata devices to numerous serious injuries and fatalities across different countries.
What Vehicle Owners Need to Do
Owners of affected vehicles are already receiving official notifications by mail and SMS. Within eight months of receiving the notice, they must contact a licensed specialist to replace the defective airbag.
Once the repair has been completed, the vehicle owner must submit the original documentation confirming the work to the Department of Road Transport. This is a mandatory requirement to verify that the dangerous defect has been corrected and to maintain the legal right to operate the vehicle.

What Happens if Owners Ignore the Requirement
Cypriot authorities warn that failure to comply within the specified timeframe will result in automatic restrictions. After the eight-month period expires, the vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate will be suspended without further notice to the owner.
In addition, the vehicle’s road tax will also be suspended, and the car will not be able to pass a technical inspection until the defect has been fully repaired and the necessary documentation has been submitted. In practice, this means the vehicle can no longer be legally operated.
Recommendations for Saab Owners
Officials from the Department of Road Transport strongly recommend that owners stop using vehicles included in the recall campaign until the defective component has been replaced. Even if the vehicle appears to be in good condition and shows no visible issues, the risk arises precisely when the airbag deploys during a collision.
Owners are encouraged to check as soon as possible whether their vehicle is included in the recall list and schedule the necessary repairs to avoid potential danger and administrative restrictions.
