From January through September 2026, 43,890 vehicles were registered in Cyprus — 9.1% more than during the same period in 2025, when the figure stood at 40,212. At the same time, hybrid vehicles became noticeably more popular: their share of registered passenger cars increased from 44% to 53%.

The data were published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. Despite overall market growth during the first nine months of the year, the number of registrations declined in September compared with the same month last year.

Vehicle registrations in Cyprus: September and nine-month results

In September 2026, 5,326 vehicles of all categories were registered in Cyprus. This was 3.9% less than in September 2025, when 5,544 cars and other vehicles were registered. Passenger car registrations decreased by 2.5% — from 4,364 to 4,254.

However, the market continued to grow over the January–September period. During the first 9 months of the year, the number of registered passenger cars increased by 9% to 34,156, compared with 31,325 during the same period in 2025. Of all registered passenger cars:

  1. 10,521 vehicles (30.8%) were new;
  2. 23,635 vehicles (69.2%) were used.

This means that nearly 7 out of 10 passenger cars registered in Cyprus during the period were used vehicles. At the same time, registrations of rental cars decreased by 17.1% — from 4,559 to 3,780.

Hybrids gain popularity as gasoline cars lose market share

One of the main changes in Cyprus’s auto market has been the growing share of hybrid vehicles. According to the Statistical Service, hybrids accounted for 53% of registered passenger cars from January through September 2026, compared with 44% a year earlier. This represents an increase of 9 percentage points. At the same time, the shares of vehicles with other types of powertrains declined.

The share of gasoline cars recorded the most noticeable drop, falling by 8 percentage points. The share of diesel vehicles decreased by 0.5 percentage points, while the share of electric vehicles also fell by 0.5 percentage points. Hybrids strengthened their position and became the most common powertrain category among newly registered passenger cars. It is important to note that these figures reflect the share of registrations during the respective periods, rather than the total number of each vehicle type currently on Cyprus’s roads.

Registrations of trucks and buses increase in Cyprus

Commercial vehicles also recorded positive growth. During the first nine months of 2026, the number of registered buses increased to 196, compared with 132 during the same period in 2025. Registrations of goods vehicles rose by 10.4% — from 4,569 to 5,046. Within this category, the changes were as follows:

  1. Light trucks: up 8.8% to 3,970.
  2. Road tractors: up 14.7% to 195.
  3. Heavy trucks: up 16.3% to 621.
  4. Rental trucks: up 20.9% to 260.

Among the categories listed, heavy trucks recorded the highest growth rate at 16.3%. However, light trucks still accounted for the largest number of registrations. The increase in commercial vehicle registrations reflects growth in this segment of the market, although on its own it does not allow for definitive conclusions about freight activity or the overall state of the economy.

Motorcycle registrations in Cyprus rise by 8%

From January through September 2026, registrations of motorcycles with engines larger than 50 cm3 also increased. Their number rose by 8% — from 3,522 to 3,802. At the same time, registrations of mopeds with engines under 50 cm3 declined from 170 to 109. Overall, Cyprus’s vehicle market grew by 9.1% during the first 9 months of 2026, despite the decline in registrations recorded in September.

The main feature of the period was the increase in the share of hybrid cars to 53%, while gasoline vehicles lost a significant share of the market. The statistics also show growth in registrations of goods vehicles, buses and motorcycles with engines larger than 50 cm3. At the same time, used vehicles continue to account for the majority of passenger car registrations on the island.
