Cyprus Police have announced a new special campaign that will run from August 24 to 30. The main goal is to reduce the number of serious and fatal consequences of road traffic accidents. Police note that loss of concentration while driving remains one of the major risk factors: even a brief distraction increases reaction time in a dangerous situation.
Particular attention will be paid to the use of mobile phones. However, checks will not be limited to phone calls made without a speakerphone or hands-free system. Other actions that prevent the driver from fully controlling the road situation may also be considered violations.
What Is Considered Distracted Driving
Cyprus Police remind drivers that any activity that diverts attention away from the road can be dangerous. In particular, this includes reading or writing messages in messaging apps, using a phone while driving, eating and drinking, smoking, changing radio stations and other actions.
Even seemingly routine actions — such as drinking coffee, eating ice cream or picking up a bottle of water — can affect a driver's ability to react quickly to a sudden situation. The greatest risk is associated with mobile phones. During a call or while using the screen, the driver must simultaneously monitor the road, which can slow down their reaction to what is happening.
What Fines Apply in Cyprus
Using a mobile phone while driving without a speakerphone or hands-free system carries a fine of 150 euros and + 2 penalty points. For a repeat offence, the fine increases to 300 euros.
Holding an unrelated object while driving, such as a cup of coffee, ice cream or a bottle of water, carries a fine of 85 euros and + 1 penalty point. Police are therefore focusing not only on the formal use of mobile phones, but also on driver behaviour in general.
Cyprus Police Urge Drivers Not to Get Distracted Even for a Few Seconds
As part of the campaign from August 24 to 30, police will step up checks on the roads, reminding drivers of the need to remain fully focused on driving. The main message of the campaign is that phones, food, drinks, cigarettes or an attempt to quickly change the radio station can wait. Just a few seconds of inattention behind the wheel can lead to a serious accident.
Police are urging drivers to set up navigation, choose a radio station and remove any objects that could cause distraction before starting their journey. It is best not to pick up a mobile phone at all while driving, even if it seems that a message or call will take only a few seconds.
