The implementation of an important infrastructure project has begun in Protaras—the construction of a roundabout near the Lidl supermarket. This section has long been considered one of the busiest in the region, especially during the summer period, when the tourist flow in the eastern part of Cyprus increases significantly.
The Paralimni — Deryneia municipality emphasizes that the project is of strategic importance for the city. The new junction should significantly reduce traffic load, improve the intersection’s capacity, and increase the level of road safety for both local residents and tourists.
Reducing congestion and safety during the high season
Special attention in the project is given to the summer months, when Protaras becomes one of the most popular resorts in Cyprus. An increase in the number of cars, buses, and rental vehicles traditionally leads to traffic jams and a higher risk of road accidents. It is expected that roundabout traffic will help organize traffic flows and reduce travel time through this section.
Municipal authorities note that improving road infrastructure directly affects the tourist attractiveness of the region, as well as the quality of life of permanent residents.
Project timeline and cost
The project is being implemented by the construction company ADELFOI KATSIOU (STYLIOTES) LTD. The total cost of the works amounts to 595 600 euros plus VAT. The execution period will be 4 months, with construction completion scheduled for the end of April 2026, that is, before the start of the active tourist season.
The Paralimni — Deryneia municipality expressed gratitude to the Cyprus Public Works Department and its director for effective cooperation, which made it possible to start the works on time and without delays.
Infrastructure as part of regional development
The project fits into a broader strategy for modernizing the road network of eastern Cyprus. In recent years, the authorities have been paying increasing attention to improving transport infrastructure in tourist areas, understanding its key role for the economy, safety, and sustainable development of the region.
