From August 7 to 9, 2026, the Cyprus Police carried out a nationwide operation targeting users of e-scooters and other personal mobility devices. Inspections took place across all districts of the island and were aimed at improving road safety.
Over the three-day period, police officers recorded 526 violations and confiscated 28 e-scooters. The most common offense was riding in areas where the use of e-scooters is prohibited, accounting for 219 cases. Another 116 riders were found without protective helmets, 86 were not wearing reflective equipment, and in 23 cases, e-scooters lacked the required lighting or had non-functioning lights. An additional 82 violations were related to other provisions of the law.
During the inspections, police officers not only issued citations but also explained the rules for the safe use of e-scooters. The authorities emphasized that inspections would continue on a daily basis throughout Cyprus.
This Is Already the Second Major Operation in Two Weeks
The latest operation became the second nationwide police campaign within a short period. Between July 31 and August 2, 2026, officers recorded 516 violations. At that time, 249 violations involved the use of e-scooters outside designated areas, 103 were related to the absence of helmets, 89 involved missing reflective equipment, 21 were related to inadequate lighting, and 54 fell into other categories.
As a result, the number of violations recorded during the two operations increased from 516 to 526. Separate inspections are also being conducted at the district level. For example, during a three-day operation in Paphos, police issued 270 citations, 86 of which involved users of personal mobility devices.
What Rules Apply to E-Scooters in Cyprus?
The main regulations governing the use of e-scooters in Cyprus have been in force since September 2022 and were further tightened in 2026. Only individuals aged 17 and older are allowed to operate e-scooters. Private e-scooters may be used on roads with a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h, as well as on bicycle lanes and specially designated shared-use routes.
Riders must comply with safety requirements, including the use of protective helmets and reflective equipment, while e-scooters must be fitted with the lighting required by law. In cases of non-compliance, the police may not only issue fines or citations but also confiscate the e-scooter.
Inspections Will Be Expanded Across Cyprus
The high number of violations recorded during the two operations demonstrates that e-scooter use remains one of Cyprus's road safety challenges. The police have announced that daily inspections will continue throughout all districts of the island. Particular attention will be paid to compliance with designated riding areas, the use of protective equipment, and the technical condition of e-scooters. For both residents and tourists, this means that relying on a lack of enforcement is no longer an option: e-scooter inspections in Cyprus are continuing, and violations will result in penalties.
