The Cyprus Public Works Department has announced a tender for the installation of vehicle detection systems at traffic lights. In Limassol, new sensors will be installed at eight intersections.

Where the sensors will be installed in Limassol

The tender provides for the installation of 14 above-ground detectors at eight intersections in Limassol. Another 11 detectors are planned for seven intersections in Nicosia. In Limassol, the equipment will be installed at the following locations:

  1. Georgiou A΄ — Ariadnis — 2 detectors;
  2. Spyrou Kyprianou — Kranou — 1;
  3. Port Vertical Road — Agoras — 2;
  4. Port Vertical Road — N. Kavvadia and Tassos A. — 3;
  5. Nikeas — 22nd Street — 2;
  6. A. Sioukri — Olympion — 1;
  7. Spyrou Kyprianou — P. Mavromichali — 1;
  8. Spyrou Kyprianou — Christoforou Agronti — 2.

This brings the total number of detectors in Limassol to 14.

How the new system will work

The system will use an adaptive traffic-control mode known as a Vehicle-Actuated Signal system, with above-ground detectors (AGD) identifying approaching vehicles. Instead of operating on a fixed timetable, the traffic lights will adjust to the actual level of traffic at each intersection.

In other words, the system will operate locally at each junction. If around ten vehicles are waiting on one side while there are none on the other, the traffic lights will be able to shorten the green phase for the empty direction and reallocate the available time to the side where a queue is forming.

The technical requirements of the tender include:

  1. vehicle detection across at least one or two lanes;
  2. installation of equipment at a height of more than 3 m;
  3. compatibility with specified existing traffic lights;
  4. installation and connection of the equipment;
  5. cable installation;
  6. system programming;
  7. demonstration of the system to department staff.

However, the tender documents do not include calculations showing exactly how much waiting times will be reduced at each intersection.

Tender details

The estimated cost of the project for Limassol and Nicosia combined is €41,900 excluding VAT. This amount applies to the entire tender, not only to Limassol. Applications are accepted until October 2, 2026, at 11:00. The works must be completed within 3 months from the start of the contract.

At present, there has been no announcement that a contract has been awarded, the equipment installed or any changes already made to the operation of the traffic lights. Official information about the tender and the list of intersections is available in the Public Works Department documentation.
