2025 Became One of Deadliest Years on Cyprus’s Roads

The year 2025 has been described as one of the darkest in recent years in terms of fatal road traffic accidents in Cyprus. The number of fatalities increased not only compared to 2024, but also against the backdrop of an overall rise in the number of accidents. According to traffic police data, 45 people have lost their lives on the island’s roads since the beginning of the year, whereas in the whole of 2024 road accidents claimed 41 lives.

As explained by senior traffic police sergeant Tasos Asikis, 45 fatal accidents were recorded last year, each claiming one life. By comparison, in 2024 there were 36 fatal accidents, but some of them involved multiple victims, which led to a total of 41 fatalities.

Trends in previous years

Looking at a longer period, the statistics show significant fluctuations. In 2020, 48 people were killed on Cyprus’s roads; in 2021, the figure was 45; in 2022, the number of victims fell to 37. According to police representatives, 2023 was the most favorable year in recent times, with 34 fatalities recorded. However, in 2024 the trend worsened again, and 2025 confirmed the rise in road accidents.

Experts link the deterioration in the situation to increased traffic intensity, a growing number of vehicles, and a decline in driver discipline, especially during nighttime hours.

Main causes of fatal accidents in 2025

Analysis of accident circumstances shows that tragedies most often occur due to inattention behind the wheel. The highest number of fatal cases—11 in total—was linked to driver distraction, primarily due to the use of mobile phones while driving. Another eight people died as a result of failing to keep to the left side of the road, and in a number of cases this was also accompanied by a loss of concentration.

Alcohol and narcotic substances continue to play a significant role: in five cases they were the cause of fatal accidents. Other incidents were triggered by speeding, pedestrian errors when crossing the road, incorrect driver maneuvers, dangerous overtaking, and violations during turns. Isolated cases were also recorded involving drivers losing consciousness and ignoring traffic police signals.

High-risk hours and increased enforcement

The most dangerous period remains the time after midnight and until early morning, when road users’ alertness decreases and violations are recorded more frequently. During public holidays, the police increased their presence on the roads, which made it possible to identify more violations, but this was not enough to completely prevent tragedies.

Authorities focused enforcement on speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of seat belts and protective helmets, and driver distraction. Special attention was given to dangerous and careless driving behavior, which according to police remains a key factor behind the rising death toll on the roads.

Current context and preventive measures

Cypriot authorities continue to discuss additional measures to improve road safety, including tougher fines, digital monitoring of violations, and the expansion of educational programs for drivers. Experts emphasize that even the strictest penalties cannot replace personal responsibility behind the wheel and the abandonment of habits that cost human lives.
