Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Set for an Update

The body-on-frame SUV Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, presented in the fall of last year, is preparing for a significant expansion of its engine lineup. It has become known that by 2029 the model will receive a diesel modification with a 2.8-liter engine and a “mild hybrid” system. Such a version is expected to make the vehicle more economical and attractive for markets where pulling power and off-road endurance are valued.

Proven 2.8-liter diesel with high torque

The new version will be based on the well-known 2.8-liter turbodiesel familiar to fans of the brand, which has already been installed on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Hilux, and Toyota Fortuner. This unit produces 204 horsepower and an impressive 500 Nm of torque, which is especially important for heavy body-on-frame vehicles designed for towing and extreme off-road driving.

In the Land Cruiser FJ version, the engine is expected to be supplemented with a 48-volt starter-generator. Such a mild hybrid system reduces fuel consumption, lowers CO2 emissions, and makes the operation of the power unit smoother. The transmission will be a six-speed automatic combined with part-time all-wheel drive, preserving the model’s traditional off-road capabilities.

Efficiency and off-road character

Toyota positions the Land Cruiser FJ as a compact but truly “authentic” body-on-frame SUV with a shortened wheelbase. Unlike crossovers with a unibody structure, the new model is designed for serious challenges beyond asphalt roads. The diesel modification will strengthen this image thanks to high pulling power at low engine speeds and better fuel efficiency compared with the gasoline version.

The mild hybrid will become an important element of the brand’s strategy for gradual electrification of its model range. Toyota is actively introducing hybrid solutions even in traditional body-on-frame vehicles, aiming to comply with increasingly strict environmental standards in Europe and Asia.

The gasoline version will arrive earlier

Before the diesel appears on the market, a gasoline version of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ with a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 163 horsepower will debut. Sales will start in Japan in mid-2026. This version will also feature part-time all-wheel drive and the classic body-on-frame construction.

The design of the model is executed in retro style with references to iconic generations of the Land Cruiser. Straight body lines, round headlights, and massive wheel arches emphasize the connection with the history of the legendary series, which for decades has been associated with reliability and off-road capability.

Prospects in the global market

Experts believe that the appearance of a diesel Land Cruiser FJ could significantly strengthen Toyota’s position in the compact body-on-frame SUV segment. Demand for such vehicles remains stable in the countries of the Middle East, Australia, Africa, and some regions of Europe, where reliability, autonomy, and the ability to operate in difficult conditions are important.

Given the growing interest in “real” off-road vehicles and the trend toward reviving classic models, the diesel version of the Land Cruiser FJ with a mild hybrid may become one of the most anticipated new products of the end of the decade.
